Grassy Island Water Storm Water Management Area

Grassy Island Trail is actually a set of trails on land in Okeechobee Florida administered by the South Florida Water Management District and maintained by local residence of the area for hiking, mountain biking and horse back riding.  It is part of a larger area known as the Taylor Creek Nubbin Slough stormwater treatment area, a 4,000 acre property which includes this area with an operational pilot stormwater treatment area on 193 acres,  and pasture lands under a cattlegrazing lease.  The area also contains significant native plant communities.  This is all part of the ongoing effort to correct bad changes which have contributed to the contamination of fresh water entering Lake Okeechobee, and the lower Everglades, as well as streams and canals leading to both the gulf and Atlantic coastal areas.
